After practicing the Exam Prep Methods of anticipating exam questions, source and topic outlines, directional word analysis, and question and answer map this past week the strategy, Q and A Map was most helpful to me. This strategy does not relate to my learning style, Auditory Learner, but this strategy stood out, and was most beneficial.
After getting back my SOM 122 and MAT 183 mid term test back in the past few weeks, and not being satisfied with my grade I decided to use the Q and A Map strategy for these courses. SOM 122 is a class I've been struggling in and is my major at Syracuse. In MAT 183 I was extremely disappointed with my grade because I felt very confident going into the test. Hopefully now that I know how to anticipate questions this wont happen. After going through my exam, breaking up the chapters and topics covered, defining the patterns of the questions, and putting this in chart form, I believe has benefited me incredibly. I have a short temper, and a lot of times after I get a test back and do poorly on it I will toss the test to the side or throw it out and never look at it again. I have gotten better over the years but this still happens occasionally. This method prevents me from doing so, If I know that after I get a test back I have to start analyzing it looking for patterns etc... I will stay more calm after bad exam grades and hopefully use this strategy proficiently so I can anticipate the questions on my next exam and thereby ace it!
I can't determine the effectiveness of this strategy till my next exam in these classes, but after using this method I will go into the exam feeling more comfortable. Looking at my completed chart of these 2 exams I felt comfortable and felt like I understood the tests and what questions I could anticipate on there next exams.
This learning style is for a visual learner, which I usually am not but after using this strategy I felt the best towards succeeding on my next exams in these classes.

  1. I am a visual learner and this strategy was not as effective for me. I felt as if this strategy only got me so far. When I used this strategy it only told me what type of questions they were looking for but not what information was being stressed. When Anticipating Exam Questions I got a feel for what kind of questions the professors asks, as well as where the information was coming from.

  2. It seems like this strategy has some great benefits for you but how do you think you might go about changing you habits or techniques knowing that the previous test was heavily definition based? It seems like from what you got from this strategy definitely has potential to aid in performing better on your exams in these course.
